Togo DISCUSSION Togo is the heroic lead sled dog who led his team through the longest and most difficult stretch of the 1925 Serum Run. What was the Serum Run? In January 1925, Nome, Alaska, had a serious outbreak of diphtheria--a serious respiratory illness--affecting mostly the children. There was a serum (medicine) for treating diphtheria, but Nome was almost 700 miles from Neana, the nearest town with a railroad. The weather was too brutal for flying the medication from Neana to Nome. The only hope was a relay with multiple sled drivers and dog teams crossing the 700 miles in 40-degree below zero weather. The cooperating teams of drivers and dogs reached Nome in 5-days. TAKEAWAY A Sled Dog Works as Part of a Team ⥤ God wants us to work as part of His team, the Church. Barry, the Saint Bernard DISCUSSION The Saint Bernard Pass was a 49-mile long, 8000 foot high mountain pass connecting Switzerland and Italy. In the 1600'`s through 1900`s, many travelers through the St Bernard Pass lost their lives. Unable to find their way when blinding snowstorms suddenly came upon them, they would wander off the trail, collapse from the cold, and be buried under the snowfall. Around 1750, monks at the Great St Bernard monastery began sending out teams of dogs after snowstorms to search for lost travelers. Resistance to cold plus an incredible sense of smell enabled this breed of dogs--which became known as St Bernards--to find and rescue lost travelers. The dogs would dig a person out of the snow and cover them for warm. One dog would return to the monastery to bring monks to bring the weakened traveler back to the monastery. St Bernards are credited with saving over 2000 people between 1750 and 1900. The most famous of all St Bernards was Barry. Barry lived between 1800 and 1812 (long before photography, so this picture is not really of Barry). Barry rescued at least 40 people from an icy death. Military Dogs - Military dogs act as sentries (watch dogs), patrol dogs looking for enemy soldiers, sniff out explosives and dangerous substances. Sgt. Stubyy was the most decorated dog of WWI. Having experienced a gas attack by the Germans early in his military career, Sgt. Stubby`s sense of smell enabled him to sense a coming gas attack much sooner than human soldiers.
